Just days following Jimmy Carter’s funeral, the Obamas released an official statement sharing that Michelle would also be away for yet another major upcoming event: the 2025 inauguration of Donald Trump. While this is a surprising break from tradition, it’s not surprising that Michelle would opt to sit this one out, given her opinions on the Trump administration.

In November 2024, she called Trump a “predator found liable for sexual abuse” and “a convicted felon, a known slumlord” at a Kamala Harris campaign rally. While she did attend Trump’s 2020 inauguration for his first term, she later admitted on her podcast, three years later, how unpleasant the experience was, admitting that she cried for half an hour after the ceremony.

Michelle spoke about how uncomfortable she felt “to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display—there was no diversity, there was no color on that stage, there was no reflection of the broader sense of America.”
