3.Stains or bad odor
The third sign is not about comfort first. It is about cleanliness. If your mattress has stains, an unpleasant smell, or just seems impossible to freshen up, then that’s a definite sign that it has to go. Over time, mattresses collect sweat, body oils, skin flakes, dust, and other buildup. That does not automatically mean your mattress is unsafe, but it does mean an old mattress can become less pleasant, less fresh, and harder to keep feeling clean.
There is also a practical reason not to ignore this. Medical guidance on dust mites explains that bedrooms are a major hotspot for dust mite exposure and that these allergens build up in places where dust collects, especially around bedding. So if your mattress has reached the point where it smells stale or shows deep stains, it may be more than just a cosmetic problem. A washable cover and regular cleaning help, of course, but they do not reverse years of wear and buildup inside the mattress itself. If you find yourself trying to mask the smell, flipping the mattress to hide the worst side, or pretending the stains are not there because the sheets cover them anyway, that is usually your answer. Your bed should feel like a clean place to rest, not something you are quietly trying not to think about.
