The moment unfolded at the 30th annual Lions Club raffle at Jena’s crowded Christmas market. Karla and her husband Bernd had bought four raffle tickets at two euros each, mostly to support the charity, never expecting ticket number 2222 to turn them into the night’s big winners.

When their number was called, they stepped onto the stage where the organizers and a local Mercedes dealer stood ready to hand over the keys to a brand-new Mercedes GLA—complete with automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and 200 horsepower. But instead of celebrating, a visibly moved Karla surprised the crowd by politely declining the car, explaining that they already owned a Skoda and were perfectly happy with it.
