Take a look at your hand. Focus on your index finger and your ring finger — the two next to each other. Which one is longer? You don’t need to measure it. Just compare them side by side. For most people, there’s a small but noticeable difference. Either the ring finger extends slightly further, the index finger does, or they’re about the same length. It’s a subtle detail, and most people never pay attention to it.

But once you notice it, it’s surprisingly consistent. And that’s what makes it interesting. Because this isn’t just a random observation people started comparing for fun. The relationship between these two fingers has actually been studied and even has a name.
