Immediately after the prisoner crossed the threshold of the prison, everything was taken from him, including the name, which was henceforth replaced by a personal identification number. The guards working in the prison did not know anything about the identity of the prisoner and the crimes he committed. They were also strictly forbidden to talk with him and have any relationship. Solitude went to extremes — all in prison were forced to wear shoes with thick felt soles, so that even the sound of their steps was not heard.
